DESCRIPTION
The Museu de la Tècnica de Manresa (Manresa Museum of Technology) is housed in the Dipòsits Vells (Old Tanks) building which collected and stored the water from the Canal de la Sèquia. It was built between 1861 and 1865 by master builder Marià Potó and supplied the town’s first water distribution network. The building features three identical and independent tanks, each of which is 800m2 in size and covered by two stone vaults resting on retaining walls and a central row of arches and pillars, with 2,400m2 in floor space and a capacity of 12,000m3 of water.
THE RIBBON TRADE One of the tanks at the Museu de la Tècnica de Manresa (Manresa Museum of Technology) is home to the first permanent exhibition about cinteria, the name given to narrow ribbon-like fabrics, a relatively little-known textile speciality but one which was very important and deeply rooted around the country and in particular in Manresa. Visitors can find out about the world of making ribbons, braids, trimmings, edgings and a whole lot more.
LA SÈQUIA AND WATER In another of the building’s tanks there is an exhibition about the importance of water and specifically about the Canal de la Sèquia, which since the 14th century has been bringing water to Manresa first for agricultural and then for industrial development. The exhibition also sets out the system for supplying water and other ways in which it could be used: gunpowder mills, flour mills, fulling mills, water pumping, etc.
