Museu del Ferrocarril
Description

The Museum is located in a valuable industrial heritage site, namely the former Vilanova i la Geltrú locomotive depot which was built in the late 19th century.

The most representative of the buildings in the depot is the Rotunda which houses one of the most important collections of steam locomotives in Europe (ranging from the oldest in Spain to the last one to be in service) and other electric and diesel locomotives together with a number of other vehicles (the first Talgo or inter-city express train and some small motor cars) and passenger coaches.

In addition to its large rail track vehicles, the Museu del Ferrocarril (Railway Museum) also has on display major items from all periods in railway history including the locking bed and signal gantry from Barcelona’s Estació de França.

The spectacular audiovisual presentation, Puja al Tren de la Història (Get on the History Train), contains 1500 images and numerous special effects which take you on a journey through the story of the railways.

New railway technologies, especially those for high speed trains, can be seen in the Espai Segle XXI (21st Century Area).

Other facilities and services:

• A children’s area called Pequetren.
• Virtual Theatre.
• The cinema and the train, Cinematrén.
• Temporary Exhibitions Room.
• Library exclusively about railways.
• Specialist shop and bookshop.
