The EL MUSEU DE LES MINES DE BELLMUNT DEL PRIORAT (Bellmunt del Priorat Museum of Mining) is sited in the former Eugènia Mine industrial complex and inside the mine workings. This location means that the Museum can illustrate and explain the importance of lead mining in the county of El Priorat over the centuries. The Eugènia Mine is some 400 metres from the town of Bellmunt del Priorat and was the most important mine of its type by size and output. It was an underground mine using a system of galleries linked by vertical shafts. The Eugènia Mine has a total of 20 underground floors or levels which go down as far as 620 metres deep, and a network of 15 km of galleries. The mining and metal industry complex was built at the pithead at the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th centuries to supplement the mining work. This enabled in situ processing of the galena (lead ore) dug out of the mine and the production of lead ingots. The complex consists of the headframe, the machine room, the washer, the workshops, the storage facilities, the smelting plant, the smoke chimneys, etc.
Mining in El Priorat peaked between the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th centuries in lockstep with industrialisation, although the lead deposits in the area have been known about and mined since pre-historic times some 3000 years ago. Visitors can also stroll around the miners’ village, built between the 1920s and the 1960s, and the majestic building that housed the management offices of Minas del Priorato, S.A, known as La Casa de les Mines (The Mine House) and built in 1905 in the modernista style of the period. Furthermore the facility is set in superb countryside in the midst of woods and vineyards and olive trees, because of course El Priorat is and always has been a very agricultural county.
