Description

The Water Museum of Lleida analyzes traces of landscapes, cultures and hydraulic technologies that have always been linked to human experiences and cultural backgrounds. Water is emerging as a theme in the overall interpretation of the territory by the close link between Lleida and water. The city was born near the river Segre and has developed an extensive network of canals and ditches that enrich your garden. In addition, the industrial Seròs canal , which is a potent producer of hydroelectric power, through the city.

The museum is divided into different points of interest the industrial heritage of Lleida, which have a direct relationship with water:

The Canadiense camp which lived the workers of this great company that hydropower became rivers of the Lleida motor of the second industrial revolution Catalan. Nowadays, There are headquarters of the museum, classroom teaching and exhibitions.

The construction of the Pla de l’Aigua water cistern was in 1784 . Thanks to it, they tried to overcome the typical Middle Age problems of hygiene and even to design a new urban plan, in the Boters area, in order to open the town beyond the walls.
The water cistern had three main objectives: 1. To store: Thanks to the water cistern, the town went from being dependent on and short of water to having a great supply in order to face all kinds of water supply. 2.To make the water drinkable: The water contained in that new cistern was bound to be drinkable unlike the one used before, which was of dubious quality and which caused, to a great extent, some illnesses and infections. 3. To distribute: The fountain system, which was part of the water cistern project, facilitated the water arrival to different spots of the town and turned it into a public service available to all citizens.

The ice wells are on the walls of the castle where they kept the water frozen in winter to have them all year. Were built in the early seventeenth century and remained in use until the mid-nineteenth century.

The museum conducts periodic tours through the canals and ditches that surround the city.
