An amendment from the CiU instils the Government to guarantee the Venezuelan judge Afiinui "a fair trial" with the presence of Spanish diplomats

The improvement, defended by Senator Roig, also requests that the Executive initiates the required procedures before the oral hearing set for March 31st.

The Iberian-American Affairs Commission from the Senate has passed an amendment from the CiU, defended by Joan Maria Roig and which modifies a motion from the PP, which instils the Government to “do the necessary procedures so that a delegation of diplomats from Spain, the EU and other states of the EU can attend as observers the oral hearing which will be held against Judge Maria Lourdes Afinui and to be able to visit her at her home where she is under house arrest.” This way, as Roig has indicated “a fair trial could be guaranteed”.

The improvement, introduced by Senator Roig, also requests that the Government “immediately informs the Commission on the procedures done and the result of them.” As Roig pointed out, “the oral hearing will be celebrated on March 31st and the judge leading the case is the magistrate who was previously challenged by the prosecuted judge”.

The senator recalled during his speech that “several organisations have reported bad treatments and both the Inter-American Human Rights Commission and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights have repeatedly requested the application of measures to protect her integrity.”

Regarding this, Roig pointed out that “on February 4th a full abdominal hysterectomy was performed on her due to her worsened health condition, mostly due to the conditions of her reclusion”.

The modification amendment of the CiU to the PP motion which was passed today states in writing:

“As a result the Iberian.-American Affairs Commission at the Senate, instils the Spanish Government to perform the necessary procedures so that a delegation of diplomats from Spain, the European Union and other states of the European Union can attend as observers the oral hearing which will be held against Judge Maria Lourdes Afinui and to be able to visit her at her home where she is under house arrest.

Likewise, the Government is requested to immediately report to the Commission on the procedures done and the result of them”.
