Meeting with Berber organisations of Catalonia

The Catalan Berbers were headed by the president of the World Berber Congress

Last Saturday the representatives from the Berber communities of Catalonia visited the Convergència and met with Carles Llorens, International Relations Secretary, Àngel Colom, Immigration Secretary and Minister Francesc Bragulat. Twenty Berber organisations, present across the entire Catalan territory, from Lleida to Tarragona and from Maresme to the Terres de l'Ebre, participated in the meeting which was headed by Belkacem Lunes, President of the World Berber Congress. The organisations, which promote the Berber House of Catalonia, consist mostly of people from Morocco, although some Algerians also participated. The Convergència's relation with these groups and more specifically with the World Congress goes far back, given the shared interests between a Nationalist Catalan party and this movement which reaffirms the native culture of North Africa. The representatives from the Convergència assessed the work done by the Catalan Berber organisations, their identification with Catalan identity and they made the commitment to support them in the promotion the teaching of Berber popular and the reaffirmation of their culture. They spoke with Àngel Colom about their participation as North Africans in the New Catalans Congress.
