Nosaltres els valencians

The Palau Robert remembers Joan Fuster on the 50th anniversary of his book Nosaltres els valencians

The Palau Robert de Barcelona presents the exhibition “Joan Fuster. Nosaltres els valencians. 1962-2012”, commemorating the 90th anniversary of the birth of the Valencian writer and intellectual and the 50th anniversary of the publication of his book Nosaltres els valencians (We, the Valencians), a brilliant political, social and cultural essay. The exhibition will be open to the public from 19 December 2012 to 17 February 2013.

The Catalan Government joins commemorations for the publication of Nosaltres els valencians by hosting this travelling exhibition, which is produced by the University of Valencia and curated by Ferran Carbó and Francesc Pérez i Moragón of the Joan Fuster Chair at that university and Brígida Alapont of the Joan Fuster House in Sueca.

Joan Fuster’s thought, valid even today

The exhibition “Joan Fuster. Nosaltres els valencians. 1962-2012” demonstrates that the thought and figure of Joan Fuster retain all their importance and validity even today, for his capacity for analysis and reflection went beyond immediate circumstance. Through documents conserved by the author, visitors will also build up a picture of who Fuster was in 1962, as well as learning more about the process of writing the book, the immediate impact its publication made and the difficulties with Francoist censorship that it began to encounter after a certain point.

Over the ensuing 50 years, Nosaltres els valencians has been published in at least 30 editions in Catalan and 3 in Spanish. Over the years, the book has had enormous impact, both on ordinary citizens and on historians, sociologists, economists and politicians.

The exhibition will also feature a large part of Fuster’s material legacy, little known to date. His house (Casa Joan Fuster) in Sueca is not yet fully open to the public, but work continues to convert the site into a study centre. Visitors will also find Fuster’s correspondence, which he bequeathed to its present owner, the Library of Catalonia. Finally, the exhibition includes a selection of artworks collected by Fuster himself – often gifts to him by the artists – including paintings, sculptures, etchings and drawings that came to form an intrinsic part of the physical environment in which the writer lived and worked.
