Òmnium Cultural has worked for over fifty years as a civil society agency to promote the Catalan language and culture and also to disseminate Catalonia’s will for freedom. In recent years one of Òmnium’s aims has been to assist Catalonia in its quest to become a new independent state. To achieve this, Òmnium, which has over 34,000 members and 28 local branches, conducts campaigns, activities and also large events such as the demonstration which brought together one million people in 2010 against the ruling handed down by Spain’s Constitutional Court against the Statute of Catalonia (a charter listing the rights and obligations of Catalans), the Concert for Freedom held on 29 June 2013 and attended by 90,000 people at the Camp Nou or the Catalan Way which took place on 11th September 2013 with over hundreds of thousands taking part.

This autumn the agency is promoting a far-reaching campaign which aims to back the Catalan civil society’s wish for Catalonia to hold a referendum in 2014 in favour of self-determination and also to promote the Yes option. Furthermore, Òmnium promotes programmes to support the Catalan language and culture such as El Premi d’Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (The Catalan Literature Prize of Honour), Nit de Santa Llúcia, Sant Jordi, the Canigó Flame and the 11th of September (the national day of Catalonia). The agency is also a promoter of the Somescola.cat platform which defends the model of linguistic immersion that enables students in Catalonia to finish their compulsory studies with knowledge of both Catalan and Spanish language and literature.
