Educational Opportunities
The Faculty of Library and Information Science offers an evolving educational program within the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). At the Bachelor’s level, two degrees are offered: Library and Information Science (with 2 delivery options: physical classroom or semi-virtual learning), and Audio-visual Communication, as well as the dual degree (Infocom).
In the postgraduate area, the Faculty offers three official Master's degrees: one in Digital Content Management, another in School Libraries and Reading Promotion, and a third in Library and Heritage Collections. It also has its own master's degree in Information and Document Management in Businesses, and a postgraduate diploma in the Book Trade. The Faculty also manages a doctoral program in Information in the Knowledge Society.
Undergraduate Degree
We offer a Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science (in both physical classroom and semi-virtual modalities), and another degree in Audio-visual Communication. The basic aim of the Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science is to prepare specialists to design, manage and evaluate information services, to develop specific capabilities for the capture, selection, organization, preservation and distribution of information and documentation, to develop communication skills for mediating between users and information, and to become open minded professionals in order to adapt to a changing work environment, marked by constant innovation of procedures and tools.
The graduates in Library and Information Science work in libraries and archives, and as information resource managers, take part in the administration of all types of public and private organizations. The variety of professional careers is quite broad: all kinds of libraries (public, academic, specialized, school, etc.), library networks and consortiums, documentation centers in government, business or institutions (such as laboratories, law firms, architectural firms, communication media, publishing houses, consultancies, companies from the Internet world, etc.).
The Audio-visual Communication degree aims to educate the professionals in this field with a global perspective, from cinema to new media, multimedia, Internet and virtual spaces. The content of the degree is organized around three areas of the profession that, at the same time, coincide with a special mention that can be noted on the student’s diploma: Audio-visual creation, Audio-visual management, and Analysis and criticism of media.
The Audio-visual Communication graduate can get jobs related to audio-visual creation (design realization, video editing, scripts, sound and image processing, animation, etc.), audio-visual management (projects management, marketing, content management, etc.) and the analysis and criticism of media in the information age (critiques and teaching in the field of visual communication, research methods, discourse analysis, etc.).
In both degrees, over the period of their studies students have different opportunities to undertake internships in businesses and institutions through educational cooperation agreements. In this way they can complete their studies and get a more direct and realistic perspective of the professional context. Needless to say, this opportunity often facilitates an initial entry into the labor market.
Master’s and Doctoral Studies
The Faculty has a varied offering of degrees –master's, doctoral and university extension courses– oriented to specialized studies, lifelong learning, and research.
Since the 2005-2006 academic year we have been offering an official Master's degree, in partnership with the Pompeu Fabra University in Digital Content Management. Also, starting in 2008-2009, the Faculty has offered an official inter-university Master's degree in School Libraries and Reading Promotion, in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since the 2012-2013 academic year, a third official Master's degree in Library and Heritage Collections is available. Finally, in the academic year 2011-2012, the Faculty began offering its own Master's degree in Information and Document Management in Businesses. In addition, there is a doctoral program in Information and Documentation in the Knowledge Society.
The Faculty also provides continuing education in the form of university extension courses open to the university community and to professionals working in the field of information and documentation, such as the Winter School of Public Library, and the School of the Book Trade.
Study Support and Training Opportunities
- Exchange programs: in addition to general grants offered by the State and the University, students in the Faculty can take part in exchange programs at the Spanish and
- European levels. SICUE-Seneca and Erasmus enable students to pursue their studies for a semester in another Spanish or European university.
- Specific grants: students in the Faculty can apply for specific grants from such bodies as the European University Institute in Florence.
- External placements outside of the curriculum: students of the Faculty have a wide range of opportunities to pursue paid work placement in companies and institutions. Each year more than 100 educational cooperation agreements are signed and they often provide an effective way for students to find employment after graduation.
- Summer Internships: the Faculty provides students with summer internship opportunities abroad in a wide variety of institution. Chief among the dozens of centers offering internships were the United Nations agencies in Geneva (UNHCR, ILO, etc.), other international organizations (International Red Cross, etc.), globally relevant libraries (Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, British Library) and others (such as Cervantes Institute libraries around the world).
Additional Information
In addition to the general services provided by the University of Barcelona, students have access to a number of specific services:
- Library: the Faculty’s specialized library collection contains nearly 22,000 volumes and 440 active journals (in paper and electronic formats). The library of the University of Barcelona also offers online services and resources (http://crai.ub.edu/en).
- Classrooms with PCs: the Faculty has five classrooms equipped with more than 100 PCs for teaching use.
- Wi - Fi areas: the Faculty offers a wireless access service to the University network (UB Wi-fi), which enables laptop users to connect within the building.
- Job Information Service (SIOF): electronic newsletter available only to our graduates with offers of jobs and scholarships that are received directly by our Faculty, as well as others posted elsewhere.
- Publications: chief among the publications available is the online journal BiD: University Texts in Library Sciences and Documentation (http://bid.ub.edu/en).
