Investing in technology and engineering to deliver innovative, smart and connected roads

Abertis manages roads in an efficient and modern way, innovating in technology and investing in smart engineering programs for a sustainable mobility of the future.

Abertis innovation program promotes projects aimed at finding solutions for smart roads and integrated mobility, for connected, autonomous and electric vehicles.

Abertis also leads innovation in the digitization of payment systems and promotes mobility solutions with the implementation of free flow tolling systems in many countries.

We have in place the Garage Innovation Program, which seeks to explore and develop initiatives to manage operations more efficiently while developing competitive advantages to capture new growth opportunities.

The projects that are being explored within this program are aimed at finding new solutions based on technological resources - such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, or the Cloud, among others - to improve the customer experience using the Abertis toll roads, and offering a safer, more comfortable, sustainable trip adapted to their needs.

SMART ROADS & INTEGRATED MOBILITY

5G corridors

5G corridors

5G technology trials over the next three years with autonomous and connected cars between Spain and France. The project will study how vehicles can stay connected to the telephone network in a cross-border area, which requires a change of operator. 5G will help reduce road accidents and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

C-ROADS

C-ROADS

Joint initiative of the EU States and  road operators to test and implement C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems) services that are in compliance with the harmonization and interoperability of the cross-border motorway systems.

Lab City Project

Lab City Project

Abertis’ subsidiary in Chile is using smart road tech to enhance safety including LED panels and laser signalling with real-time traffic information.

Collaboration with Waze

Collaboration with Waze

Abertis has joined Connected Citizens international program through Waze, the community-based traffic and navigation app. This two-way data sharing partnership will allow combine the real-time traffic information from Waze with the data collected at Abertis operations centres in 7 countries – Spain, France, Brazil, Chile, Puerto Rico, Italy and Argentina. The aim is to ease congestion and improve road safety.

Electric cars

Charging points

Charging points

Our toll roads in France have fast charging points every 80 km, which charge 80% of the battery in just 30 minutes.

Dynamic charging

Dynamic charging

Sanef has studied, within the European Fabric and E-way corridor projects, the development of an electric corridor that allows finding wireless charging solutions by motorway for electric vehicles, especially heavy vehicles. These projects involve many other companies (concessionaires, manufacturers of materials, automotive, energy ...) as well as public administrations, which already have the conclusions of the studies.

AUTONOMOUS & CONNECTED VEHICLES

Vehicle-infrastructure communication

Vehicle-infrastructure communication

In France we have installed communication equipment on the toll roadthat allows the exchange of information on traffic conditions, construction areas, lanes, etc. Sanef has carried out tests with Symbioz, Renault's autonomous vehicle prototype, thanks to which the car industry will be able to perfect its prototype. This will optimize mobility, transform the customer experience and ultimately make roads safer.

Inframix project

Inframix project

We took part at Inframix, a project to evaluate the role that infrastructures will play during the period of coexistence between conventional and autonomous vehicles, with the aim of making roads faster, safer and socially beneficial. Autopistas has offered a 20-kilometer stretch of the AP-7 toll road to test the 3 priority vectors of the project: dynamic lane assignment, work zones, traffic jams and congestion.

RESEARCH

Abertis Chairs Network

Abertis Chairs Network

The Abertis Chairs Innovation International Network promotes the training, research and transfer of knowledge between University and Business.

The programme is now run in partnership with five leading universities in Spain, France, Brazil, Chile and Puerto Rico with prizes awarded to recognise the very best academic research in Transport Infrastructure and Road Safety.

MOBILITY ENHANCEMENT

MOBILITY ENHANCEMENT

Innovative approaches

We are pioneering a number of innovative approaches across our network to enhance mobility and to reduce traffic, reducing polluant emissions. For example:

  • 100% free-flow - meaning less congestion, less accidents and less emissions
  • Dynamic Toll Lanes - adjusting pricing in real time to enable congestion-free travel
  • Reversible lanes - to increase capacity in peak hours

BARRIER-LESS MOBILITY

BARRIER-LESS MOBILITY

Barrier free mobility

Emovis is the Abertis subsidiary dedicated to the development and management of information technology and services to offer barrier-less e-toll solutions and smart mobility in the world. With over 550 employees in 7 countries, Emovis is committed to helping millions of people travel smoothly along the roads. It operates some of the busiest free flow infrastructures in the world, in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Emovis leads the free flow on the Mersey Bridge, Liverpool, which incorporates a highly innovative and pioneering mixed technological solution in Europe. It is also a leading operator in the implementation of Road Use Charge (RUC) programs, including a pay-per-mile pilot in Oregon (USA).

INTEROPERABILITY

INTEROPERABILITY

Seamless movement

Abertis, via its electronic toll payment management companies – Eurotoll, Bip&Drive, Bip&Go – is leading the deployment of the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS). Its aim is to allow interoperability of different networks, working with other concessionaires to ensure seamless travelling between different countries.
